ORiGiN Recordings is proud to announce the release of the Original Cast Album of the fresh new Australian musical The Lucky Country.
Following its acclaimed debut season at Sydney’s Hayes Theatre, the smash hit new musical, The Lucky Country - about what it means to be Australian has had a studio cast album produced by orchestrator Heidi Maguire & Michael Tan under the supervision of creators Vidya Makan and Sonya Suares.
The album is due to be released on August 14th with the first preview single “It’s A New Day” out now HERE!
With an original score that pays homage to some of Australia’s greatest musicians, this 60-minute musical takes audiences on a joyful and moving ride through a patchwork of Aussie stories. Digging deep into the themes of identity and belonging, The Lucky Country is a heartfelt and wildly entertaining celebration of who we can be as Australians.
Created by two of Australia’s most exciting theatre-makers — composer and lyricist Vidya Makan (Hamilton, SIX) and director Sonya Suares (Into the Woods, Sunday in the Park with George) — The Lucky Country reclaims and reimagines the national songbook with a thrilling soundtrack, performed by an ensemble of seven artists – Joseph Althouse, Dyagula, Vidya Makan, Milo Hartill, Jeffrey Liu, Ava Madon and Karlis Zaid.
From protest anthems and synth-laced ballads to playful Australian bangers and soaring ensemble numbers, The Lucky Country pulses with musical and emotional variety. The cast recording stands alone as an invitation to reflect, to laugh, to dance, and to rethink what unites us.
Composer and lyricist Vidya Makan said: “We wanted the music to feel instantly familiar — like flipping through the radio dial of Australia. You’ll hear echoes of Baker Boy, Jimmy Barnes, Kylie, The Seekers, Electric Fields plus loads more — all remixed through a contemporary lens that feels uniquely ours.”
“This album is more than a document of the show,” says director and co-creator Sonya Suares (Into the Woods, Sunday in the Park with George). “It’s a musical mixtape of our country’s hopes and contradictions — irreverent, honest and uplifting. It’s for anyone who's ever felt on the outside of the ‘Australian story’ and wanted to be heard.”
A fresh production of the show will open at Melbourne’s Lawler Theatre from Monday 13 October, before heading to Brisbane Powerhouse as part of MELT Festival where the show will play from Wednesday 22 October.
